Hamilton College attracted the media’s attention quite often this year in feature stories and news reports. Among the areas most often addressed by the media in covering Hamilton were topics related to the admission process.

WAMC/Northeast Public Radio in Albany will feature a reading by Professor of Government and Director of the Public Policy Program P. Gary Wyckoff on Thursday, Oct. 7, as part of the public radio station’s Academic Minute. The program normally airs each weekday at 7:37 a.m. and 3:56 p.m at 90.3 FM in the Clinton area but because WAMC is in its fall fund drive, the Academic Minute will not air at its usual times. Instead, it will be played as a floating module throughout the day.  

Six members of the Hamilton College faculty have been promoted to the rank of professor. Associate professors Debra Boutin, mathematics; Naomi Guttman, English; Shoshana Keller, history; Doran Larson, English; Herm Lehman biology; and Gary Wyckoff, government, were promoted, effective July 1.

The spring 2010 edition of Insights, the journal that features the best of undergraduate social science research papers at Hamilton, has been published by the Levitt Center. Edited and refereed by students and Associate Professor of Government P. Gary Wyckoff, Insights features articles by J. Max Currier '10, Lauren Howe '13, Richard Maass '12 and Julie Melowsky '11.

The small Kirner-Johnson classroom was packed on Monday, May 3, for a debate regarding Obama’s healthcare reforms and how these policies might be bettered. Fourteen public policy majors, “armed only with a semester's worth of study of the economics, ethics and politics of health care,” engaged in the debate.

It has taken 17 years, but the president and Congress have finally accomplished what eight Hamilton students achieved as part of a public policy class: overhaul the health care system.

Associate Professor of Government P. Gary Wyckoff spoke at the Irish Social Science Platform Annual Conference hosted by the national University of Ireland at Galway on Dec. 2 about his recently published book, Policy and Evidence in a Partisan Age: The Great Disconnect.

Associate Professor of Government Gary Wyckoff has written a book titled Policy and Evidence in a Partisan Age: The Great Disconnect, published in May by Urban Institute Press. Wyckoff directs Hamilton's Public Policy Program.

The students of Professor Gary Wyckoff's Topics in Public Policy classes tackled the public health care system on Sunday, May 4. Students were divided into two groups and charged with the task of devising a plan to cover the nation's uninsured and growing medical costs. Both group's plan had to be specific, comprehensive, fiscally sound, ethically defensible and politically feasible.

Hamilton alumni who are experts in health care will be on campus Sunday, May 4, to critique Hamilton students' proposed solutions to the U.S. health insurance system. The critique will take place in the Red Pit at 7:30 p.m. The students are from two of Professor Gary Wyckoff's "Topics in Public Policy" classes.  Alumni panelists are Karen Volmer '94, assistant professor of health policy and administration, Penn State University; David Duggan '75, professor of medicine at SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse; and Tim Finan '75, president and CEO, Olean General Hospital, Olean, New York.
