Associate Professor of Chemistry Ian Rosenstein recently published an extensive, book-length review chapter in Volume 110 of the Wiley monograph series Organic Reactions.

The Chemistry Department recently hosted organic chemistry students and faculty from Colgate University and Hobart and William Smith Colleges for SmORS, the annual Summer Organic Research Symposium.

Associate Professor of Chemistry Ian Rosenstein and Julia Ganson ’21 recently attended the 46th National Organic Chemistry Symposium (NOS) at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.

Organic chemistry students and their research advisors from Hamilton, Colgate University, and Hobart and William Smith Colleges gathered for the annual Summer Organic Research Symposium (SmORS).

John DeGuardi ’16 and Allie Eckert ’15, both chemistry majors, are researching ‘organic radicals’ with Associate Professor of Chemistry Ian Rosenstein this summer. Generally, the students explain, electrons are paired within an atom and have opposing spins that help stabilize the atom. A radical, however, is an atom with an unpaired electron in its outer shell. Since the electron in the outer shell does not have a counterpart, the atom is unstable and highly reactive.

A group of 16 organic chemistry research students and their faculty mentors, Professors Ian Rosenstein, Max Majireck and Robin Kinnel, traveled to Colgate University to participate in the annual Summer Organic Research Symposium on July 1.

Ten current and former Hamilton Chemistry Department faculty members co-authored a chapter titled “A Departmental Focus on High Impact Undergraduate Research Experiences” in a recently published edition of the American Chemical Society Symposium Series dedicated to “Developing and Sustaining a Successful Undergraduate Research Program.”

Associate Professor of Chemistry Ian Rosenstein attended the National Organic Symposium from June 25-28 at the University of Washington in Seattle.  This biennial conference, held by the Organic Division of the American Chemical Society, features invited talks on cutting edge research in all aspects of organic chemistry plus several hundred poster presentations.

Hamilton’s highest awards for teaching were presented on May 4 to five faculty members. Ian Rosenstein, Christopher Vasantkumar, Andrew Dykstra, Heather Buchman and Patty Kloidt were honored at the Class & Charter Day ceremony.

For organic chemists, improvements in methods of synthesizing molecules can make big differences in the time and material that go into the molecule’s synthesis. This summer, Talia Steiman ’12 and Robert Woodworth ’12 are working with Associate Professor of Chemistry Ian Rosenstein on a chemical synthesis that utilizes a unique method to simplify the process and cut down on waste.
