Martine Guyot-Bender, the Christian A. Johnson Excellence in Teaching Award Professor of French and Francophone Studies, discussed Cambodian Arthouse cinema at a recent international colloquium at Villanova University.

About 30 students from three classes recently went on a joint field trip to the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, N.Y.

President Joan Hinde Stewart recently announced the appointment of eight Hamilton faculty members to endowed chairs.  Doug Ambrose (history),  Brian Collett (physics), Martine Guyot-Bender (French), Gordon Jones (physics), Tim Kelly (mathematics), Heidi Ravven (religious studies), Patrick Reynolds (biology) and Michael “Doc” Woods (music) received appointments. All are effective July 1.

On May 5-6, students in Hamilton’s Junior Year in France (JYF) program visited three cities in the east of France: Nancy, Metz and Strasbourg. The trip coincided with the second round of the French presidential elections which Socialist Francois Hollande won over UMP president-elect Nicolas Sarkozy.

Professor of French Martine Guyot-Bender contributed "'Les belles images': 'Sottisier,' roman prémonitoire ou récit universel?" to a special issue of German journal of French Comparative Studies, Lendemains, in honor of the 100th anniversary of Simone de Beauvoir's birth in 2008. The article examines the social content of Les belles images (1967), one of de Beauvoir's least-appreciated novels which was, at the time it was published, rebuked by critics and readers and somewhat ridiculed by de Beauvoir herself.
