Robert Moses, a 1956 graduate of Hamilton College, is the first recipient of the $100,000 Nation/Puffin Prize for Creative Citizenship. The award was created to recognize an individual "who has challenged the status quo through distinctive, courageous, imaginative and socially responsible work." Moses founded the Algebra Project, which helps low-income and inner-city students achieve math skills needed for standardized testing and college-level work. The program today reaches about 10,000 students and 300 teachers a year in 10 states.
