A recent New York Times Magazine article featured the work of attorney Mary Bonauto '83 to advocate same-sex marriage in Vermont and Massachusetts.In both states Bonauto filed lawsuits challenging the exclusion of same-sex couples from the civil institution of marriage, leading to landmark decisions.

In Vermont Bonauto and two other attorneys filed a lawsuit that led to the creation of "civil unions." She filed a similar lawsuit in Massachusetts on behalf of seven same-sex couples, which led to a Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court decision in favor of the same-sex couples. The story was also carried by the Boston Globe, Washington Post and USA Today
