Phil Klinkner, associate professor of government, will be the next speaker in the Kirkland Project Brown Bag series on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at noon in the Red Pit at KJ. His talk is titled "Whose Vote Doesn't Count?: An Analysis of Spoiled Ballots in the Florida 2000 Presidential Election."

The 2000 presidential election was decided by just over 500 votes in Florida, but in that state, nearly 170,000 ballots were spoiled (no valid vote for a presidential candidate), more than enough to have influenced the outcome.  What factors account for this large number of spoiled ballots?  In particular, were there differences in the rate of spoiled ballots between black and white voters?  If so, what factors might account for this difference? Brown Bags are informal and all are welcome to attend and join in the discussion. For more information, contact the Kirkland Project office at x4288.
