Professor of Economics Derek Jones participated in the Annual Conference on Transition Economies in Hanoi, Vietnam. Jones discussed two papers, "Local Protectionism and Regional Specialization: Evidence from China 's Industries" by Chong-En Bai et al and "Revenue Sharing and Control Rights in Team Production: Theories and Evidence from Joint Ventures" by Zhigang Tao et al. The conference was sponsored by the William Davidson Institute, Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and the Ford Foundation.

According to the William Davidson Institute's Web site, the conference provides "a forum for leading economists and other social scientists working on transition and on broader issues of development and institutional change to meet, present new research, develop collaborative relationships and complete ongoing research." The William Davidson Institute and the Center for Economic Policy Research organized the conference; the Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences and the United Nations Development Program hosted the event.

In addition, Jones was awarded a grant from the William Davidson Institute of the University Michigan for a project, "Insider econometrics: Evidence for the Balkans." The project runs from 2004-2005.
