Men's Basketball (3-0)

The men's basketball team got off to a strong start to the 1999-00 season as they went 3-0 last week. On Tuesday night the Continentals traveled to Utica College, defeating the Pioneers, 84-70. Brendan Ferretti led the scoring with 23 points.

Over the weekend Hamilton began UCAA play with a trip to the North Country. On Friday night the Continentals defeated Clarkson University, 80-79. Jim McCarthy led the way with 15 points. Kris Fudge and Brendan Ferretti each grabbed seven rebounds.

Saturday St. Lawrence fell victim as the Continentals defeated the Saints, 89-80. Once again Jim McCarthy led the scoring with 19 points. Freshman Joe Finley grabbed nine caroms.

Women's Basketball (1-2)

The women's basketball team went 1-2 this week. Monday night they played host to Utica College, losing a close ballgame, 68-63. Clinton native Amanda Siepiola led the Continentals with 18 points. Sabrina Valenta and Karen Pogonowski each grabbed nine rebounds.

Hamilton got in the win column on Friday against Clarkson as they downed the Golden Knights, 64-56. Jenny Russell led the way with 20 points. Valenta grabbed seven rebounds, blocked four shots and had eight steals.

Against St. Lawrence the Continentals hung with the Saints in the first half. However in the second half St. Lawrence gradually pulled away, eventually winning, 90-57. Jenny Russell had 13 points, while Valenta grabbed 10 rebounds.

Men's and Women's Swimming

The Hamilton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams each placed first at the 1999 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) Championships held at Union College. The women took first place with an overall score of 876, while the men won with a score of 917. Head coach Dave Thompson was named UCAA Women's Coach of the Year.

For the women Jen Kunz had a strong meet with first place finishes in the 100 backstroke, the 50-yard and 100 freestyle. She was also a member of the winning 200 and 400 medley relays. Anne Fedak was named UCAA Rookie of the Meet for her first place finishes in the 1,650 freestyle, the 400-yard individual medley and the 200 butterfly. Diver Cady Kashner won the one-meter and three-meter springboard events with scores of 359.55 and 410.10 respectively. Katerina Donovan was named Female Swimmer of the Meet. She won the 100 and 200-yard breststroke, 200 freestyle and was a member of the winning 200 and 400-yard medley relay teams. Her time in the 100 brestsroke has provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championships in that event.

On the men' side senior D.J. Postles and David Cecere were named Co-Swimmers of the Meet. Postles scored victories in the 1,650 and 200 freestyle as well as the 400- medley relay and the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relays. Cecere won the 200 breastroke, the 200 and 400-yard individual medley. Diver Scott Carlton won the one-meter springboard event with a score of 372.73 and was third in the three-meter event with a score of 291.0

Men's Hockey (2-2-0)

The men's ice hockey team got back on the winning track with two road victories over the weekend. On Friday the Continentals downed NESCAC foe Williams College, 5-3 in Williamstown. Mike Phalen and Victor Cizmarik were among the goal scorers.

The next night Hamilton downed Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 8-1. Senior co-captain Chris Baudo had a hat trick to lead the way. The Continentals play host to SUNY Geneseo, Manhattanville and SUNY Oswego in the Hamilton Invitational this weekend. Friday's games are at 4 and 7 p.m., with Hamilton hosting SUNY Geneseo in the second game. Saturday's games are at 1 and 4 p.m.

Women's Hockey (0-5-0)

The women's hockey team continues to struggle as they dropped three games this week. On Tuesday evening the Continentals lost to Colgate 7-1. Friday Hamilton hosted Bowdoin, losing 5-2, while on Saturday they lost to Colby College, 2-1. Freshman Paula Dady had a solid week as she scored three points on two goals and an assist. Hamilton hosts North Country Community College on Wednesday evening and Mercyhurst College on Saturday night.
