The appointment, which becomes effective on July 1, was made by David Paris, who will serve as acting dean of the faculty for the 2000-01 academic year.
"Professor Elgren is an outstanding teacher-scholar," said Paris. "He has been an active participant in the curricular review process as a member of the Committee on Academic Policy and is a visible and articulate spokesperson in the ongoing discussions of programs and facilities in the sciences. I look forward to working with Tim, particularly on issues of budget and curriculum."
A recipient of the college's Hatch Excellence in Teaching Award, Elgren has also advised three senior fellowships, received an Emerson student-faculty collaboration award, and co-authored several publications with students. He has also received grant support from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Henry and Camille Dreyfus Foundation, the Research Corporation and the American Chemical Society.
"Professor Elgren's track record for involving students in meaningful research exemplifies Hamilton's commitment to providing undergraduates with substantive and significant academic opportunities," Paris said.
A native of Minnesota, Elgren received his bachelor's degree from Hamline University in 1984 and his Ph.D. in chemistry from Dartmouth College in 1989. He has been a member of the Hamilton faculty since 1993.
Elgren and his wife, Gail Johnson, are the parents of two children. The family resides in Clinton.
