In January 2001, Hamilton College will introduce a program of study and internship experience in New York City centering on the idea of globalization. It will operate in both the fall and spring terms.

"This is a very exciting program and a significant addition to Hamilton's curriculum. We think it will appeal to a wide range of students and faculty and that it will succeed," said Frank Anechiarico, professor of government. Professor Anechiarico will serve as program administrator along with a committee including professor of economics Erol Balkan and professor of anthropology Henry Rutz.

The program, "Hamilton in New York City: Political Economy and Culture in the Global City," will be open to juniors, seniors, and a limited number of sophomores.Students will live in Manhattan in apartments leased by the college. While some expenses, like local transportation, will be higher in New York, program participants will pay the same room fee for a term in New York that they would pay for a term in the dorms in Clinton.

Students will work about 30 hours a week in internships connected to the particular academic topic of the program. The topics listed in the original proposal include Globalization and Financial Networks, Arts and Culture in the Global City, and Media in the Digital Age.

In addition to internships, each term will include an interdisciplinary course on globalization and two courses specific to the topic of the term. One or both of the topic-specific courses will count toward the concentration in the director's department.

According to members of the program committee, the idea of a program in New York City received enthusiastic support from President Tobin, the Admissions Office and the Communications and Development Office.
