Visiting Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature Julie Kruidenier Tolliver '02 presented a paper at the Cold War Cultures conference at the University of Texas, Austin. This conference brought together scholars of different disciplines working on the Cold War era.

Tolliver's paper, titled "Political Consciousness as Magic Realism: The Cold War and the Novels of Jacques Stephen Alexis," was part of a panel on the Cold War writings of the African diaspora. Tolliver argued that Alexis' fictional depictions of Haiti complicate global Cold War structural oppositions by introducing local questions of race and racism.
