Local Fraternity Chapter Establishes Scholarship

The Hamilton College chapter of Delta Upsilon fraternity has established an endowed scholarship for students attending the college. Recognition of the new scholarship will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, at the former Delta Upsilon House on Campus Road.

In awarding the annual scholarship, preference will be given to members of the fraternity who are in good academic standing and who demonstrate financial need.

The fraternity also created an endowed fund at the college to assist with the operations of the undergraduate chapter. It will be utilized with preference given to activities that encourage participation in national fraternity programs and other activities that promote leadership development. The fund also may be used for new-member education programs.

"Hamilton is grateful that the members of Delta Upsilon have sought to strengthen the college with valuable scholarship support, while at the same time providing leadership opportunities and training for the undergraduate chapter," said President Eugene M. Tobin. "The type of investment the chapter is making in its members and in its programs is a strategy we hope other private societies at Hamilton will adopt in the future."

"The process for us was beneficial for the students and an easy transition for the chapter," said Thomas Morris, a 1981 Hamilton graduate and the fraternity's alumni president. "It shows the administration is willing to accept the viability of societies on the Hamilton campus."

The Hamilton Chapter of Delta Upsilon fraternity was established in 1847. Both "The Delta Upsilon Fraternity Scholarship Fund" and "The Delta Upsilon Fraternity Membership Development Fund" were established with the proceeds from the sale of the chapter's house to the college in 1996.
