Mary Bernardine Dias, a 1998 graduate of Hamilton College, is a member of a Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute team that is testing Hyperion, a new solar-powered experimental robot, in the Canadian arctic. The prototype robot has the potential to be
self-sufficient and will help researchers test a technique called Sun-synchronous navigation. Dias worked on implementing the software that allows the robot to drive autonomously using processed data from the stereo camera. She is one of the team of seven (4 staff and 3 students) going to the arctic.
