Associate Professor of French Cheryl Morgan prepared the English subtitles for the Franco-Lebanese film Sutra, selected for competition in the Middle Eastern documentary category at the 13th edition of the Beirut International Film Festival. Written by Maria Boulos, Catherine Diran and Stéphane Allegret and edited by Pierre-Marie Nizan, the 57-minute film was shown in October at the Beirut festival.
Sutra follows Maria Boulos to Beirut for the wedding of her childhood friend Jeanet. Lebanese and Parisian, Boulos observes the city’s young women who are reputed to be the most modern of the Arab world but who are also subject to impossible beauty standards. As she walks the streets of the reconstructed and face-lifted capital city, she confronts her fears about being single and considers the role of women in post-war Lebanon.
