Today's 10:45a.m. lecturer in the Amphitheater is Cheng Li, professor of government at Hamilton College. The title of his speech is "Generational Change and New Forces in Chinese Sociey." Li was born in Shanghai and grew up during the Cultural Revolution. He came to the United States in 1985 and later obtained a master's degree in Asian studies at the University of California at Berkeley and a doctorate in political science at Princeton University... "The Cultural Revolution affected me enormously," Li said. "My brother, a graduate of Fudan University was caught listening to the Voice of America and the BBC. He was beaten to death."... "The U.S. Congress says there's been no progress in China," Li said. "It's not a democracy, but there's been political progress."
