The initial image of a diverse campus is one that is comprised of a variety of students with different ethnicities and nationalities. While Tobin acknowledges and even admits that this is a ideal to strive for, he claims that this is not "real diversity." "Real diversity" occurs when there is a diversity of thought and opinion. Tobin believes that, "...a truly diverse community must remain open to ideas, values and opinions that disagree with the majority." To fully achieve diversity on college campuses, Tobin feels that one must emphasize diversity in all arenas. Tobin writes, "Addressing issues of representational diversity, at the same time as we provide our institutions with a plurality of ideas, ensures that the full spectrum of viewpoints and experiences is represented in our residence halls, classrooms and faculty meetings."
