California State Professor Victor Davis Hanson will present a lecture, "Ancient Wisdom and the Present War," on Friday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Hamilton College Chapel.

Hanson is author of An Autumn of War:  What America Learned from September 11 and the War on Terrorism.  Currently professor of classics at California State University at Fresno,  Hanson earned his Ph.D. in classics from Stanford University in 1980.  However, he dropped out of academia for five years to pursue farming full-time. 

In 1991 he was awarded an American Philological Association Excellence in Teaching Award and was named alumnus of the year in 2002 by University of California, Santa Cruz. A frequent contributor of more than 150 articles to many newspapers and journals, including the New York Times and The National Review, he has also written or edited 11 books, specializing in Greek, agrarian and military history. His book, Carnage and Culture: Landmark Battles in the Rise of Western Power published in 2001, was on the New York Times Bestseller List.
