Ashleigh Smythe, visiting assistant professor of biology, co-taught a workshop on the taxonomy and identification of free-living marine nematodes at Kyoto University's Seto Marine Biological Laboratory in Shirahama, Japan, March 21-24.

The workshop was sponsored by the NaGISA Project, an international Census of Marine Life field project. The Japanese word nagisa refers to the narrow coastal zone where the land meets the sea. NaGISA members (researchers, managers and students) are producing the world's first near shore global habitat census. The workshop focused on training students from developing Asian countries, with eight students from Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines.
