Wesleyan University used a pair of big innings to cruise to a 9-2 victory over visiting Hamilton College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference West Division game on April 2.

Hamilton (2-9 overall, 0-1 NESCAC West) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as the Continentals scored on a wild pitch. With one out, back-to-back singles by Leigh Sherrow '11 and Rachel Rapoza ‘10, and a walk by Melissa Kaknis ‘13 loaded the bases. The Wesleyan pitcher uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Sherrow to score from third.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Wesleyan (11-6, 1-0) went ahead for good with a four-run rally with two outs. Hamilton cut its deficit to 4-2 in the top of the fifth. Following a leadoff walk, Rapoza popped up to short, but two more walks loaded the bases with one out. Cara Vennari ‘12 struck out looking, but Liz Farrington ‘10 singled through the left side to score Sherrow.

Wesleyan responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning for a 9-2 lead. Amy Appel ‘13 took the loss for Hamilton, falling to 1-6 on the year. Rapoza led the Continentals with two singles.

Wesleyan and Hamilton square off in a twinbill on Saturday, April 3, to close out their three-game NESCAC West Division series.
