Last summer Hamilton alumna Jenney Stringer '08 was awarded a Community Service Fellowship, one of two Levitt Summer Civic Engagement Fellowships awarded in 2007. She worked with Judith Owens-Manley, associate director for community research, on a project to create and facilitate a community garden in Utica for refugees living in public housing. The project took most of the summer to establish, but the garden is now a reality and the residents are already enjoying the fruits of their labor.

Stringer penned an opinion piece for the Utica Observer-Dispatch that recognized and thanked the many organizations that contributed to the project's success. She also highlighted the many benefits that the project currently offers residents and expressed her vision for the project's future.

Rachel Bigelow '10, one of this year's Levitt Summer Civic Engagement Fellowship recipients, has assumed the role of overseeing the garden project and assisting the gardeners in establishing parameters for its management. She talked about her experiences working with the refugees in a recent video that was shot on the day the refugees' plants were delivered to the garden.
