The New York Times published a feature article (6/8/03) about Hamilton alumnus and trustee Thomas Schwarz '66, appointed in April as president of SUNY Purchase, who is winning praise for erasing the school's deficit and aggressively raising funds.

From The New York Times article:

"At the time, the school faced a $5 million deficit and the 500-acre campus was dotted with 30-year-old buildings with leaky roofs and skylights and clogged drains. Since then, Mr. Schwarz has nearly erased the deficit, and he has organized a campus renovation program: the drains are being replaced, the music building and several lecture halls are being rehabilitated and residential areas are being landscaped.

In addition, he has worked to rebuild morale at the school, and to heal the rift between the arts faculty and the liberal arts faculty, Dr. Amory said. Mr. Schwarz "is a believer in participatory democracy, who listens before he decides," she said.
