 Lisa Trivedi

Associate Professor of History Lisa Trivedi delivered a paper "Depicting Labour, Performing Labour: Working Women in Pranlal Patel's Jyoti Sangh Series" and Chaired a panel at a conference held at Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi, India. Drawing upon images featured in Refocusing the Lens, a photography exhibition featured at Hamilton's Wellin Museum of Art last year, the paper explored how the working class women depicted in the Jyoti Sangh series and by the photographer in 1937 played a significant role in creating these images of their laboring bodies.

Trivedi was invited to the conference, which was sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research, by Dr. Biswajit Das and Dr. Dev Pathak, sociologists who teach at Jamia Millia Islmia and the South Asian University respectively.  The conference, "Performative Communication: Culture and Politics in South Asia," seeks to define a new field of study by drawing upon methods in the social sciences, humanities and arts.
