Professor Phil Klinkner has written article for the September 2001 issue of Political Science and Politics, the journal of the American Political Science Association.  The article, "Waving the 'White' Flag: Racial Voting Patterns in the 2001 Mississippi Flag Referendum," examines the racial polarization, with respect to how Mississippi citizens voted on the issue of changing the current Mississippi flag, which contains the Confederate battle flag, to a new non-Confederate design.

In this study, Klinkner looks at county level election data in order to show the racial polarization of this issue. After analysis of the information, Klinkner concludes that race is still a deep dividing line in Southern politics, especially with regard to this flag debate.
