Preparation for the opening of the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art was the focus of a WKTV news report on Sept. 20. Museum director Tracy Adler described the open design of the museum and the opportunity it offers students and visitors to see the processes involved in receiving and preparing art. Its two-story glass cases as well as expansive gallery space also allow viewers to see much more of the museum’s collection.
Adler discussed the concept of object-based learning that is at the foundation of the museum’s mission. Exhibition curator and Associate Director of Skidmore’s Tang Museum Ian Berry described the work in the inaugural show, “Affinity Atlas,” as ranging from “paintings from the 19th century, Greek terracottas from thousands of years ago, to brand new contemporary work." He added that some of the art was coming from “London, Brazil, Los Angeles - art work from some of the best artists working today."
Major construction on the building is completed. The museum will open to the public on Oct. 6. Admission is free.
