The Hamilton Digital Commons is an open archive for scholarly and creative works by Hamilton College faculty, students and staff. The first work was added to the Hamilton Digital Commons in November 2016.

About the Digital Commons

Materials in the Hamilton Digital Commons are made available for educational and research purposes only under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND 4.0 license. Acceptable uses include personal study, distribution to students, research, and scholarship (including computational research uses such as data and text-mining, citation-extraction, or cross-referencing). In using this material, you agree to the following:

  • Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the terms of use, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the author or Hamilton College endorses you or your use.
  • Non-Commercial — You may not use the material for commercial purposes.
  • No Derivatives — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material.

Any additional restrictions or permissions beyond those granted under these terms of use are noted on the information pages accompanying individual works.

  • The work’s credited authors must:
    • include a current Hamilton College faculty member, student, or staff member;
    • or, have been requested to submit work for a Hamilton-sponsored event or publication.
    Individuals who are closely affiliated with Hamilton College (e.g., emeritus professors, etc.) may also request permission to have their work included in the repository.
  • The work must be creative, scholarly in nature, research oriented, or of institutional significance.
  • The work must be stored in a widely adopted file format.
    • Student work must be recommended for inclusion by a faculty member, an academic department, or a Hamilton office for whom the work was produced. These can include:
      • theses and senior capstone projects
      • prize-winning submissions for college awards
      • grant-funded research
      • course projects
    • In cases where individuals do not control the rights to a work they would like included in the Digital Commons, authors may submit descriptive metadata to assist users in accessing a copy of the work from another source.

  • Authors retain their copyright for all works submitted.
  • Authors may update and add to existing works.
  • Authors may request the removal of an individual work for any reason. Requests for the removal of works by multiple authors require the agreement of all Hamilton-affiliated authors.
  • Materials in the Hamilton Digital Commons are made available for educational and research purposes. Authors may grant additional rights under their control to users through a Creative Commons license.

  • Authors are responsible for obtaining permission for any third-party content included in their submitted work that does not fall within fair use.
  • Authors are responsible for compliance with publisher agreements governing previously published or forthcoming works.
  • Authors must consent to the terms governing submissions outlined in the Hamilton Digital Commons Contributor Agreement.

Individuals who contribute work to the Hamilton Digital Commons agree to the following:

I, as a creator of this work, grant Hamilton College permission to share the work in an open-access digital environment intended for educational purposes. I give Hamilton College permission to make this work available to all users and to migrate it to accessible formats as necessary. I have ensured that necessary copyright permissions have been cleared.

I and any co-authors retain all intellectual property rights to the work that are under our control at the time of its submission. Requests for use of this work for purposes other than education will be referred back to me as copyright holder.

Your liaison librarian can help you add your work to the Hamilton Digital Commons. We just need you to:

  • Send a CV identifying the works you want to include.
  • Provide PDFs of work you want to make available for download.
  • Meet with a librarian to review your profile page and learn how you can manage your online presence.
