Rideshare & Carpooling Safety Tips
Here are a few simple ways to stay prepared and make smart travel choices.
- Check the driver and vehicle. For rideshares, make sure the license plate, car model, and driver photo all match what’s in the app. For carpools, ride with people you know and trust.
- Share your trip. Use the rideshare app’s share feature, or let a friend know where you’re going and when you expect to arrive.
- Wait somewhere safe. Choose a well-lit, public area while you wait. If it’s late, try to avoid waiting alone.
- Travel with a friend when possible. It’s always safer (and usually more fun) to ride together.
- Sit in the back seat. This gives you more space and lets you exit from either side of the vehicle if needed.
- Keep your phone handy. Make sure it’s easy to reach in case you need to send a message or check directions.
- Speak up if needed. If something feels uncomfortable, it’s okay to ask the driver to stop in a public area where you feel safe.
- Every passenger MUST have a seatbelt.
- Plan ahead. Make sure everyone knows the destination and who’s driving.
- Don’t overcrowd. Every passenger MUST have a seatbelt.
- Talk it through. For longer trips, agree on things like music, gas money, or driving shifts ahead of time.
- Help your driver. Stay calm, avoid distractions, and offer to navigate or handle directions if needed.
