“My first semester in Madrid was incredible. I’ve become pretty comfortable with the language, but the more I learn, the clearer it becomes how much further I have to go before I declare myself fluent. As I develop my linguistic fluency, I'm also working toward a sort of “cultural fluency,” exposure to, integration into, and reflective understanding of a foreign culture. To that end, I’ve been teaching and tutoring English seven hours a week to young teens and two doctors in their homes and offices, getting to know Spanish home- and work-life from the inside. I bought a cheap acoustic guitar in a flea market and made a little extra cash on the weekends as a street musician singing and playing Beatles songs in the park with a friend. We completed a joint field research project for our urban anthropology class on street musicianship, integrating research, interviews with our fellow buskers, and our own experiences. But perhaps my most valuable resource for pursuing that cultural fluency is Consuelo, the 60-year-old woman with whom I live and eat and share my observations and experiences. As for academics, I took four classes last semester, all in Spanish, though with other American students: Art History, Urban Anthropology, Grammar, and Flamenco Dancing (what fun!). Anyway, I’m very much looking forward to my next four months in Madrid, and will try to take as much advantage as possible of what I believe is one of the greatest privileges I have ever been granted.”

“Ir a España por un semestre fue una de las mejores decisiones que he tomado en mi tiempo en la universidad. Quería mejorar mi capacidad de hablar y aprender español, y me di cuenta de que no podía hacerlo sin una inmersión total. Por eso elegí el programa de Hamilton porque da mucho énfasis en la dedicación de sus estudiantes a la lengua ya que no están permitidos hablar inglés durante el semestre.  Al principio, esta regla era difícil cuando quería comunicarme con otros estudiantes, pero todos aprendimos expresarnos rápidamente.  Además del énfasis en el aprendizaje de español, el programa nos proveyó unas excursiones increíbles. Vimos muchos lugares interesantes en el país y siempre nos quedamos en hoteles buenísimos con comida rica. Tenía miedo de perderme muchas cosas de mi universidad en los Estados Unidos, pero creo que mi experiencia aquí ha valido la pena.”

“Of all the skills I took away from my four years of college my semester abroad was the only time that allowed me to step away from my major and usual extra-curricular activities. Although I was a Theater major, in Madrid I did an internship with a preschool to explore my interest in early-child development. HCAYS offered so many unique classes that friends and I were able to take everything from an in depth study of Cervantes’ Don Quijote to an introductory Flamenco dance course. Classes and excellent professors aside, the real magic of my experience in Madrid was my homestay family. Paloma, my Senora, made sure that alongside the wonderful trips HCAYS took us on to all parts of Spain, that I also got to live a normal, daily madrileno life with her family. The experiences and relationships that I have taken away from my semester in Madrid; with my homestay mother and sisters, my professors, my friends from the program and with the beautiful city itself will stay with me forever.”

“My experience with Hamilton’s College’s Academic Year in Spain Program was extremely positive. My homestay family was incredible, they were very kind and always made sure I was well fed and taken car of. It was easy to get to school in the morning, either by foot or using the metro. The Hamilton staff really makes the program. The teachers are extremely knowledgeable and the staff goes out of their way for you every day. From Flamenco lessons to discussions about Spanish Sociology and Literature, the academic courses were well organized and engaging. My art history course even met weekly at the Prado museum to discuss art on-site! Monthly excursions exposed me to various Spanish regions and cities such as Seville, Santiago de Compostal, Granada, Toledo and more however, my favorite was definitely our trip to the Canary Islands for its annual Carnaval. I cannot say enough about this program! As a Foreign Languages major who arrived with a solid background in Spanish, it really did a lot for me. I cannot wait to go back to Madrid and visit the Hamilton staff!”
