Meditation has been utilized by many of the world's religious traditions in various forms and does not belong exclusively to any one of them. Based upon this non-sectarian approach to meditation, the Hamilton Sitting Group provides an opportunity for all members of the Hamilton community, regardless of religious background, to practice and explore as a group the many methods of meditation. We feel that meditation can benefit the members of our community by cultivating a greater understanding of ourselves, our difficulties, and our differences. The Group offers opportunities for introductory instruction to those who have never practiced meditation before. Those who are already familiar with a method of meditation are also more than welcome to practice and share their insight. The Group gets together for practice and discussion a few times weekly. However, practice sessions and meetings are not mandatory and no formal commitment to the Group is ever required.
"Fortunately we live in a time when all over the world many people are becoming familiar with meditation. It is being increasingly accepted as a practice that cuts through and soars above cultural and religious barriers, and enables those who pursue it to establish a direct contact with the truth of their being. It is a practice that at once transcends the dogma of religions and is the essence of religions. Generally we waste our lives, in endless activity; meditation, on the other hand, is the way to bring us back to ourselves, where we can really expereince and taste our full being, beyond all habitual patterns." -Sogyal Rimpoche The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying
