Processing grab sampler

Photograph shows Athan Barkoukis (left), from Colgate University and Nat Warner of Hamilton College processing a grab sampler on the deck yesterday afternoon. Samples from the grab are used by the biologists and geologists to document the benthic life forms and the sediment characteristics of the upper part of the sea floor sediment.

A very relaxing day as the Italian team collected seismic data in the Prince Gustav Channel. We are currently at the head of the channel and are continuing a line out along to the north- east coast of James Ross Island. Sometime during the night we will reverse our course and should be near Croft Harbor, a large fjord on the north coast of James Ross Island around sunrise.

Plans for tomorrow call for spending a large portion of the sunlit hours on shore on James Ross Island. High hopes for good weather, the "milder" temperatures that we had today and little wind. We've seen lots of penguins swimming near the boat this afternoon so hopefully there will be lots of them on the island tomorrow.

Cheers,

Dave
