The Oligarchy and the Old Regime in Latin America, 1880-1970 by Dennis Gilbert, professor of sociology emeritus and lecturer in sociology, was recently published by Rowman & Littlefield.

Professor of Sociology Dennis Gilbert wrote an essay for the Huffington Post about his experiences working with and for Bernie Sanders in the early 1990s. "Adventures with Bernie," published on Jan. 12, chronicles Gilbert's experiences with Sanders at Hamilton and later as his research director during his first successful run for a seat in the U.S. Congress.

The New York Times printed a letter to the editor written by Professor of Sociology Dennis Gilbert in response to a Jan. 26 article titled “More Fall Out as Middle Class Shrinks Further”  The letter, published on Jan. 30, was titled “Defining the Middle Class.” Gilbert is the author of The American Class Structure in an Age of Growing Inequality, and often speaks to the media on related topics.

Both the NBC News site and the The Christian Science Monitor quoted Professor of Sociology Dennis Gilbert on issues related to the release by the U.S. Census Bureau of the nation’s real median household income. The NBC article appeared in dozens of additional publications across the country.

The national media highlighted Hamilton College in multiple ways throughout 2012 by focusing on faculty research and expertise, featuring opinion pieces, and announcing new endeavors and special student projects. From The Today Show to NPR’s All Things Considered to The Chronicle of Higher Education, the college was visible in the media across the country.

Professor of Sociology Dennis Gilbert was interviewed about America’s middle class for CNBC.com and for l'Unità, an Italian newspaper. Gilbert is the author of The American Class Structure in an Age of Growing Inequality (Sage, 2011)

Professor of Sociology Dennis Gilbert was a guest on the Connecticut Public Radio (WNPR) morning call-in show “Where We Live” on Aug. 28.  He was part of a conversation on the middle class. Participants discussed political candidates’ views on the middle class as well as how it’s defined and how politicians use the term. Gilbert is the author of The American Class Structure in an Age of Growing Inequality.

The  Associated Press, in an article titled “SPIN METER: ‘Middle Class’ turns fuzzy in politics,” quoted Professor of Sociology Dennis Gilbert, author of The American Class Structure in an Age of Growing Inequality. Appearing in hundreds of news outlets in print and online on July 18 and 19, the article addressed how politicians use the term “middle class” and how their definitions vary.

WAMC/Northeast Public Radio in Albany will feature a reading by Professor of Sociology Dennis Gilbert on Monday, March 5, as part of the public radio station’s Academic Minute. During his reading, Gilbert examines exactly who is considered middle class, pointing out that there are many definitions.
