On May 21, 2001 The New York Times reported on the Drama Desk awards won by "The Producers."

Headline:  'The Producers' Dominates Drama Desk Awards, With 11

"'The Producers,' the ridiculous Mel Brooks musical about putting on a show, received 11 Drama Desk awards last night, a record, with Nathan Lane being selected as outstanding actor in a musical over, among others, his co-star in the show, Matthew Broderick. The two also go up against each other in the Tony Awards next month.

With its pile of awards, the Brooks show was in a class by itself, although there were other multiple winners, including "'The Invention of Love'" and "'Mnemonic,'" with three awards each. The Drama Desk, an organization of professional writers, critics and editors, presented the 46th annual awards in a ceremony at La Guardia Concert Hall at Lincoln Center...

Other awards for "'The Producers'" included Mr. Brooks and Thomas Meehan for the book, Mr. Brooks for the lyrics, Doug Besterman for orchestrations, Robin Wagner for set design and William Ivey Long for costume design."
