The William F. Canough Scholarship

The William F. Canough Scholarship was established in 1960 through a bequest from William F. Canough.

William F. Canough (1871-1953) grew up in Sandy Creek, NY. During his time on the Hill, he was a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity. Following graduation in 1893 with a B.A. degree, he went on to become a principal in Parish, NY. He began reading law and, by 1897, was admitted to the New York State Bar. After practicing law in Syracuse for many years, he was appointed commissioner of assessment and taxation for the city of Syracuse. Mr. Canough was a very active member of his community through the Citizens Club of Syracuse, the Masonic fraternity, the Oswego County Historical Society, and the May Memorial Unitarian Church.
