The C.F. Hemenway and Frank Barbour Memorial Scholarship

The C.F. Hemenway and Frank Barbour Memorial Scholarship was established in 1965 by Mrs. Leah Barbour in memory of her husband, Frank Barbour, and of Charles F. Hemenway, Class of 1910.

Charles F. Hemenway was born in New York City. He entered Hamilton in 1906, where he was a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity. After graduating in 1910, he moved to Illinois to begin his career in banking and served, for a time, as chairman of the Illinois Company, Inc. in Chicago. He also served as alderman in Evanston, Illinois and as a trustee of Evanston Schools. Charles was an active supporter of Hamilton throughout his life, serving as a member of the Hamilton Alumni Council from 1940-42, Alumni Trustee from 1947-53 and Charter Trustee from 1955-56. Charles was known as "Mr. Hamilton" around the Chicago area, where he and other alumni established a scholarship program for residents of Illinois.  The Illinois Scholarship Foundation Fund was transferred to Hamlton in 1999. He passed away in 1976.

Some of "Charlie's Boys" have continued to make additions to this fund over the years, most notably Brent Wedding, Class of 1958.
