He was a member of the Charlatans and the Theta Delta Chi fraternity. William graduated in 1958 with an A.B. in history, and that same year enrolled in the Naval Officers Candidate School. He worked as a bombardier/navigator and line officer for the air intelligence unit of the Sixth Fleet aboard the aircraft carriers USS Saratoga, USS Intrepid and USS Enterprise, serving for 22 years. After his retirement from the Navy, he worked as a sales representative for Weichert Realtors and later as a market manager for Pan American Airways in New York City, Chicago, and New Zealand.
