The Harold H. Smith Scholarship

The Harold H. Smith Scholarship was established by John H. Smith, Class of 1940, and his wife, Winifred S. Smith, in memory of his father, Harold H. Smith, Class of 1913, and is awarded with preference given to students majoring in art, dance, creative writing, music or theatre.

Harold Smith’s father and Jordan ’76 Smith’s grandfather worked as a divisional trainmaster for the O and W Railroad in Norwich, New York.  Harold was a temporary employee during summer vacations and developed a fascination for railroading. His mother encouraged him in his studies and motivated him to be a teacher. Following his graduation from Hamilton Phi Beta Kappa, he became a school teacher and principal of several schools.  To extend his teaching career, he acquired a degree in education from Columbia University. He excelled in teaching science and math and also had a life-long interest in the arts. Literature, music, foreign languages and theater were significant to him.  This scholarship, established by his son and daughter-in-law to honor his memory, will be awarded to students studying the fine arts.
