Chinese Summer Immersion Program for Central New York Students

Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, Hamilton College in collaboration with Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES

July 6- July 11, 2014

The Chinese Summer Immersion Program for Central New York Students is designed as a one-week residential camp program. The program aims to provide a rewarding summer immersion experience for 16 highly motivated students.

Program Goals

  • Provide students a language immersion experience on the Hamilton College campus
  • Improve students' linguistic proficiency and cultural competency through an outcome-based curriculum, task-based instruction, authentic cultural experience, and individualized one-on-one online tutoring and peer interaction
  • Develop the interactive distance learning technology to expose students to authentic Chinese language, people, and culture through participatory online learning tools


  • Participants must have completed 7th grade and taken at least two years of Chinese language instruction
  • Preference will be given to students who have participated in the Central New York BOCES Program
  • Students are allowed to participate in the STARTALK summer immersion program for a maximum of 2 years, to allow new students access to the program

Program Cost

  • STARTALK scholarships will be available for all admitted students
  • The scholarship will cover program tuition, meals, text material, instructional cost, distance tutorial, and technology support
