Patrick Alexander Machan ’90

Patrick Alexander Machan ’90, a pharmaceuticals sales representative and executive, was born on Nov. 1, 1966, in Zlin, Czech Republic (formerly Gottwaldov, Czechoslovakia) to the former Nadezda Papirnikova and Alois Machan. He spent his early childhood in Zlin before moving to Rye, N.Y., in 1984, where he graduated from Rye High School and excelled at ice hockey.

At Hamilton, Machan pursued a major in economics and a minor in government. He also brought his skills to Sage Rink as a member of the Continentals hockey team.

Following graduation, Machan participated in the Anchor Bank training program, working with mortgage-backed securities. He then joined Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in Queens, N.Y., as a sales representative before opening Pfizer’s sales offices in Bratislava, Slovakia. Fluent in four languages, he later served as country manager for the Czech Republic and gained extensive experience working throughout Central Europe.

In 2002, Machan returned to the U.S. with his family, settling in Greenwich, Conn. After he left Pfizer in 2006, he held various pharmaceutical positions in New York, Dubai and Kiev, where he was a general manager for Novartis in their Sandoz operations in Ukraine.

Throughout his life and travels, hockey remained his true passion, and he continued playing as an adult. He also enjoyed golf and skiing.

Patrick A. Machan died on Dec. 13, 2016, in Prague, the Czech Republic, at the age of 50. He is survived by his former wife, Joan Suter ’88, and four children, including Patrick Suter ’21.
