Special Edition — ‘We Are Hamilton’

Edvige Jean-François ’90
Guest Editor Edvige Jean-François ’90
This special edition of Hamilton magazine comes at a time when our nation is grappling with race relations, and many are asking, “Where do we go from here?”

Guest editor and veteran journalist Edvige Jean-François ’90 and more than two dozen Black alumni and community members give voice to what it means to them to be Black in our world today. From a father who sits down with his son to have “The Talk,” to three generations of Black women voting together for the first time, their powerful personal stories are ones we hope will propel the conversation forward.

Below is a sampling of three features that appear in the issue. A complete version of the magazine is available as a PDF. We invite readers to share their feedback.

The Black Experience in Black & White

As he rises through the ranks in real estate property management, Joshua Bruff ’05 is often reminded that he is Black. His anecdotes prompt the question: What would you do in the same scenarios?

Since George Floyd: A Measure of Our Progress

Lorna Lightfoot-Ware ’88 introduces this feature — with illustration by Kirubel Tesfaye ’21 and a poem by Jahmali Matthews ’22 — in which Black alumni and students reflect on how Floyd's death has affected race relations in America.

Black Lives Matter and the Art of Solidarity

Following the death of George Floyd, people worldwide gathered to protest racial injustice. Sakhile Matlhare ’10 was one of them. In Germany, she is co-founder of an art gallery that addresses issues of inequality, racism, and power imbalances.
