Six Hamilton students — Lara Barreira ’25, Nikki Conlogue 25, Miranda Gregory ’25, Kelvin Nunez ’24, Christina Stoll ’25, and Mimosa Van ’26 — are studying abroad this semester, thanks to assistance from Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships.

In preparation for a new volume titled Genealogy: A Genealogy (ed. Erlenbusch-Anderson and Lorenzini) with Columbia University Press, A. Todd Franklin, professor of philosophy and Africana studies, and other contributors met online January 12 and 13 for a workshop devoted to each author presenting their chapter and discussing it with fellow contributors.

The 13th issue of Book XI: a Journal of Literary Philosophy with the theme "Books, Reading, and Being Read," was recently published. It includes an essay by Visiting Assistant Professor of Government Joel Winkelman as well as other essays, stories, and poems about the theme.

Dylan Tinashe Manguwa ’25 and Aditi Kumar ’27 have been selected to join 30 other undergraduates from across the country on the National Humanities Center’s 2023-24 Leadership Council. Nominated by faculty, the students will receive professional development and mentoring from leading scholars and other humanities professionals as well as research support, opportunities for networking, and access to NHC programming and expertise.

Katheryn Doran, associate professor of philosophy, hosted the second Philosophy of Film Without Theory conference on Oct. 21-22. Doran’s talk “I May Destroy You: TV and the Growth of Understanding” grew out of conversations with students in her Philosophy of Film course about the paucity of treatment in film and TV of all but stereotypical violent sexual assault by strangers.

Professor of Philosophy Russell Marcus and Catherine Schmitt ’24 are the co-authors of an article appearing in the fall 2023 issue of APA Studies on Teaching Philosophy, a publication of the American Philosophical Association.

Public health work has taken Sherene Brown Cora ’97 across the globe to Africa. In August she moved from a job in Rwanda with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the HIV field to pursue a similar post in Lesotho.

Dean of Faculty Ngoni Munemo recognized 10 faculty members with Dean’s Scholarly Achievement Awards in three categories — career achievement, early career achievement, and notable year — at the May 2 faculty meeting. These awards recognize individual accomplishment and reflect a richness and depth of scholarship and creative activity across the faculty.
