Robert Martin, visiting assistant professor of government, served on as chair of the panel on "Reason, Rationality, and Democracy," and as discussant for the panel on "Theories of Republicanism at the American Founding," at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association, in San Francisco.

Shoshana Keller, associate professor of history organized and spoke on a panel September 13th at Hamilton College. Panelists Yael Aronoff, Tolga Koker, Russell Blackwood, and Steve Orvis, who was the moderator of the discussion, "Understanding the terrorist attacks." On September 17th, Keller started a regular fact feature on Islam and the Middle East in The Daily Bull, the campus news bulletin, with Lisa Trivedi. This continued through November 15th. Keller also led a discussion at the Levitt Public Affairs Center on the historical background to the terrorist attacks on November 15th.

Roberta Krueger professor of art presented a paper on "Chrstine's Treasure: Women's Honor and Household Economics in the *Livre des Trois Vertus* at the Congress of the International Courtly Literature Society in Tubingen, Germany.

The Hamilton College Library has received a donation of Civil War papers, consisting of enlistment papers for the 117th Oneida County Volunteer Regiment. The papers were donated by Katherine, Charles, Linda and Kevin Turley, the children of Edward M. and Doris Alberding Turley, of Clayville.

The Fred L. Emerson Foundation, Inc. of Auburn, N.Y., has announced a $500,000 challenge grant to permanently endow student-faculty collaborative programs at Hamilton College. The grant carries with it a one-to-three challenge to Hamilton, meaning the college must raise $1.5 million in order to receive the foundation's full $500,000. Once fully funded, the Emerson Scholars Program will provide grants for approximately 20 students each summer to work closely with a faculty mentor.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded Hamilton College $330,000 to assess student learning in a liberal arts setting over a three-year period. "Hamilton is committed to assessing the impact of a liberal arts education on student learning," said President Eugene M. Tobin. "The public deserves greater accountability, and we are prepared to demonstrate the effectiveness of our educational program to students, current and prospective parents, alumni and higher education opinion leaders."

Forty-three multicultural students from high schools around the nation are currently visiting the Hamilton College campus for a week of exposure to liberal arts education in a program called Summer Starter.

Karen Leach, former chief information officer at Colgate University, has been named vice president for administration and finance at Hamilton College. Leach assumes the position held previously by Daniel J. O'Leary, who will become Hamilton's vice president for investments, a new position.
