After two years of supporting virtual conference attendance, ROOTS — Hamilton’s Society for Students of Color in STEM — took 14 members to the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Students (ABRCMS) in Anaheim, Calif. The trip, which took place from Nov. 8 to 12, came at no fee to students, thanks to funding from the Dean of Faculty’s Office and a grant from Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

“What do you think happens when we die?” I posed that question to a fellow first-year student during auditions for Yodapez, Hamilton’s most beloved — and only — improv group. I do not remember the response on account of the raucous laughter that erupted.

Early this summer, Lilia Harlan ’22 began to strategize about how to connect students and faculty concerned about sustainability and climate change and just. The result — the Sustainability Fair.

Tucked away in the Taylor Science Center’s greenhouse, a new aquaponics system brims with tilapia, lettuce, and other developing life. Built in 2019 by Hamilton’s Aquaponics Club, the system promotes on-campus food sustainability while also providing a space for students and faculty to learn about aquaponics. And with its accessibility, regular maintenance, and potential to expand with student interest, the system does just that.
