College videographer Zack Stanek takes a look back at 2022 at Hamilton.

When he looks to the sky it’s not a plane or Superman in his sights for ornithologist Craig Caldwell ’73, who resumed pandemic-restricted travel in 2022 in search of birds — Guatemala in April, a fourth trip to Brazil in June, and Australia in October.

December’s news highlights include an essay co-authored by President David Wippman on whether college is too hard and a New York Times essay featuring the use of oral exams at Hamilton.

Get to know a few members of the class and the courses they loved, their favorite campus meals (it’s a breakfast bunch!), and how they spent their first months on College Hill.

In an essay titled “Is College Too Hard?” appearing in Inside Higher Ed, President David Wippman began by reviewing student stress versus workload.

In his holiday video this year, President David Wippman ponders what it would have been like to attend Hamilton in the ’70s. With three taps of his red Converse sneakers, his wish comes true, and he’s a student on the Hill. Watch the video to see him travel back in time!

Katie Rockford ’24 first heard about the Harvest, a popular student-powered food-salvage program on campus aimed at tackling local food insecurity issues, from upperclass students during the pandemic. Passionate about environmental and social justice issues herself, Rockford wanted to bring the program back following its necessary COVID-19 hiatus, but knew she’d need a lot of help to make it happen.

Director of the Health Center Barb Fluty received the New York State College Health Association’s 2022 Vincent J. Lamparella Award for Perseverance and Leadership in College Health on Dec. 15. The award recognizes college health professionals who contribute time, talent, and leadership to bolster and strengthen their own health service and/or NYSCHA when needed most.

At the 1812 Leadership Circle Weekend in New York City earlier this month, President David Wippman reminded those gathered that Hamilton’s mission is to prepare students for lives of meaning, purpose, and active citizenship.
