What if artificial intelligence machines could learn from each other? Or talk to each other, without human input? That’s what Visiting Assistant Professor of Computer Science David Perkins and his research group are exploring this summer.

Shaq Levy ’20 likens his new job as a medical scribe at CityMD, an urgent care walk-in center in Manhattan, to speed dating. “Each patient comes in, you build a rapport with them, get their medical history, the reason they are coming in today, and ask more questions about their complaint,” Levy said.

As an academic he leans toward hands-on pursuits that take him far from Michigan State University, where he is professor emeritus of urban and regional planning. At the moment Roger Hamlin ’67 is a Senior Fulbright Scholar at a university in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

Avery Lum ’22 had big plans this summer to take on a full-time fellowship with otolaryngologist Daniel Roberts ’97 at UConn. Then the coronavirus pandemic hit. Instead of taking the summer off, Lum devised a fall-back plan.

Ella Antolini ’21 has long had an interest in telehealth, and since the start of the pandemic, that interest has only become more pertinent. This summer she is interning in the neuroscience department of Maine Medical Center, working to review and improve telehealth services.
