Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature Melek Su Ortabasi has received a research fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), which is administered in the U.S. through the Social Science Research Council (SSRC). Since she also has the Japan Foundation fellowship, she will now be able to spend three semesters in Tokyo pursuing her research. She will return in December 2007 and be back teaching in the Spring of 2008.

Ernest Williams, the Leonard C. Ferguson Professor of Biology at Hamilton College, will discuss and sign his latest book, The Nature Handbook: A Guide to Observing the Great Outdoors, at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 4811 Commercial Drive, New Hartford, on Tuesday, May 9, beginning at 7 p.m.

Hamilton's Class and Charter Day celebration, an annual convocation recognizing student and faculty excellence during the preceding academic year, will take place on Friday, May 5, at 12 p.m. in the Chapel. This year's speaker, Hamilton Life Trustee Elizabeth J. McCormack, will be awarded the Esther W. Couper Presidential Award and present remarks titled “The Challenge of Engagement.” An all-campus picnic will follow the awards and HamTrek, the third annual campus triathalon, will begin at 2:30 p.m.

Academic achievement prizes, prize scholarships and other recognition of student accomplishments were awarded at Hamilton's 56th annual Class & Charter Day convocation on Friday, May 5, in the Chapel. Among the top prizes, Tyler Zink '07 won the Milton F. Fillius Jr./Joseph Drown Prize Scholarship and Haley Reimbold '06 was awarded the James Soper Merrill Prize. A total of 176 students won other prizes and scholarships for public speaking, writing and achievement in all academic disciplines.

Haley Reimbold, a candidate for graduation from Hamilton College later this month, has been awarded the national Huntington Public Service Award. The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award provides a $10,000 stipend for a graduating college senior to pursue one year of public service anywhere in the world.

First-year student Eric Kuhn will host an interview in the college’s radio studio with Republican State Senator Ray Meier, candidate for Sherwood Boehlert’s 24th Congressional district seat, on Thursday, May 4, at 3:00 p.m. The half-hour interview will be broadcast live on WHCL 88.7 FM.

Students in Hamilton’s Washington program met with Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court John Roberts during a recent visit to the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice shared insights about the Court and its operation with the students. Following his remarks, Roberts took questions and received “Someone from Hamilton College Loves You” stuffed animals for his young son and daughter.
