Director of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art Katy Kline gave a lecture on November 2 titled "The College Museum: Bowdoin" in the Science Auditorium. Kline highlighted Bowdoin's collection as well as drew attention to the college's recent efforts to renovate and expand its current museum facility.

Masaaki Kamiya, assistant professor of East Asian Languages and Literature, recently published an article in Journal of Japanese Linguistics 21 (2005). The title of this paper is "Syntactic Categories and Argument Structures of Verbal Nouns in Japanese Light Verb Constructions." Kamiya contends that word formation, argument structure, and nominalization are all explained in syntax without any stipulations like the previous studies. The contribution of this paper is to reduce a burden of lexical mechanism to syntactic mechanisms.

Cheng Li, the William R. Kenan Professor of Government, has been appointed to the advisory committee for the China Futures Initiative, a joint project between the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and Institute for International Economics (IIE). China Futures Initiative will serve to explore the relationship between the U.S. and China and provide a balanced and dispassionate evaluation of China's prospects and their implications for U.S. interests and policy. China Balance Sheet, the initiative’s publication, is designed to help U.S. policymakers, corporate executives and the media better understand the facts and dynamics of China's rise. The advisory committee will guide the project and contribute to the content of the China Balance Sheet.

Jan Mazurek, director of the Progressive Policy Institute’s Environmental Policy Program, gave a lecture titled “Public Policy Responses to Global Warming” on November 2 as part of the Levitt Center series “Responsibilities of a Superpower.” Mazurek discussed the United States government’s reaction to the threat of global warming and possible programs to implement in response.

Recently retired Hamilton College financial aid director Ken Kogut received the 2005 New York State Financial Aid Administrators Association founders Service Award at its Annual Conference held in October on Long Island. The Service Award is presented for outstanding achievement and service to the association. Kogut served on conference committees and worked with the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities in methodology development. He was well known as being a mentor to both public and private school aid offices, and he advised many on packaging strategies and methodology changes while being a strong advocate for students of all ages.

Art Lecturer Sylvia de Swaan presented a lecture titled “Return” at the Jan van Eyck Academie, a post academic institute for research and production in the fields of fine art, design, and theory based in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The academy offers individuals and institutes the opportunity to submit research or production proposals and initiates projects for which artists, designers and theoreticians can apply.

The sweet sounds of gospel music will fill the Chapel once again when Hamilton hosts its seventh annual Gospel Celebration. Participants of all faiths or musical ability are invited, along with children and families, to share in this uplifting event.

As we approach the calorie-laden holiday season, it's not too early to start thinking about how to avoid the temptation of goodies or at least manage one's weight. Hamilton offers employees several ways to keep fit, including a lunchtime aerobics program, yoga/Pilates and Weight Watchers at Work.

Life Trustee Dick Couper '44, will be guest speaker at Think Tank on Friday, Nov. 4, at noon in KJ 221. Couper's topic is "New York Public Library Nonpareil." A Hamilton trustee for 46 years, he was the first president and CEO of the New York Public Library and remains as president emeritus. Think Tank is a student-directed organization that works to stimulate dialogue between students, faculty and staff outside of the classroom.

Cheng Li, the William R. Kenan Professor of Government, has been appointed to the Academic Advisory Group of the U.S.-China Working Group (USCWG). USCWG, a bi-partisan initiative, was established in 2005 to build relations with China and to increase Congressional awareness of the importance of U.S-China issues that affect the decision-making in the U.S. Congress. More than 30 members of Congress have joined USCWG.
