Elizabeth Fox-Genovese, Eleanor Raoul Professor of Humanities and Professor of History at Emory University, presented a lecture titled "Life or Death: Who Decides?" at Hamilton on January 27. The lecture was the first part of a special two-speaker examination of abortion issues and was sponsored by Levitt Center.

Cheng Li, the William R. Kenan Professor of Government, presented a talk titled "Emerging Intra-Party Partisanship in China" at the Conference on Party Politics and Foreign Policy in East Asia, hosted by the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia on Jan. 27.

Freddie Dias '05 and Clinton resident Tom Phelan were featured in a Syracuse Post-Standard article (1/27/05) about their tsunami relief efforts in Sri Lanka, written by Kat McGrory '05. McGrory, former editor-in-chief of The Spectator, is a contributing writer at the Post-Standard. Dias is a Sri Lanka native who was home for winter break when the deadly tsunami hit. Phelan, the husband of Hamilton Associate Professor of Communication Catherine Waite Phelan, went as a member of a crisis relief team associated with IBM.

Cheng Li, the William R. Kenan Professor of Government, was interviewed by Voice of America radio about the death of Communist Party Leader Zhao Ziyang. Li says the Communist leaders have been trying to ensure that Mr. Zhao's funeral and eulogy do not ignite what might be an explosive new debate. "They don't want to see it widely publicized," he said. "Certainly, they don't want to repeat what happened 16 years ago because of the emotions and other things could lead to a very sustained, prolonged event."

Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry Karl Kirschner created the artwork for the cover of the January 2004 issue of Carbohydrate Research An International Journal. The artwork shows the binding of a modified glycan linked to a portion of an antibody protein. The corresponding research was performed by Dr. Geert-Jan Boons of the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center at the University of Georgia.

Dan Chambliss, the Christian A. Johnson Excellence in Teaching Professor of Sociology, has been appointed to the Executive Committee of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which is the accrediting body for Hamilton and about 500 other colleges and universities. He has been a commissioner since 2002. The commission totals 27 members; the executive committee is a six-member group that advises the executive director.

Barbara Tewksbury, the William R. Kenan Professor of Geology, will repeat her lecture, "When the Seas Rise Up: A Geologist's Perspective on Tsunami," on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. in the Chemistry Aud. The tsunami of December 26, 2004 may well be the defining geological catastrophe of this generation. This lecture will explore the phenomenon of tsunami, including causes and evolution, and will cover risk of tsunami in the world, particularly in the Atlantic. All are welcome.

Professor of Geology Eugene Domack, a member of the Hamilton faculty since 1985, has been appointed to the editorial board of Geology, the premier geoscience journal. Geology is published monthly by the Geological Society of America and is considered a first-tier journal by professionals in all fields of the geosciences.

In the days and weeks immediately following September 11th, Hamilton joined with the world community in denouncing the terrorist acts of that tragic morning. We all share deeply in the pain of the families who lost loved ones. Many people view Ward Churchill's comments concerning 9/11 as repugnant and disparaging the 3,000 people killed that day, including three Hamilton alumni and the father of a current Hamilton student.
