Hamilton student Sarah Doane '03 and Colgate student Emily Constantine '04 are on an Antarctic research expedition led by Glenn Berger of the Desert Research Institute. Glenn Berger sent an update as they collect samples at Lallemand.

Hamilton College's highest awards for teaching were presented on Friday to three faculty members from the anthropology, French and history departments. They were honored during the College's annual Class & Charter Day celebration, an annual convocation recognizing student and faculty excellence during the preceding academic year.

James Bradfield, the Elias W. Leavenworth Professor of Economics, was interviewed by the Associated Press for an article about the U.S. economy. "I think the war is something of a sideshow," said Bradfield. "The likely effect of a war is substantially less important than the lack of confidence among consumers and investors." The article also appeared in Palm Beach Post among others.

Two Hamilton College seniors have been awarded prestigious Thomas J. Watson Fellowships for 2003-2004. Chris LaRosa of Winsted, Conn., and Huy Huynh of Endicott, N.Y., were notified on March 17 that their project proposals were among 60 national winners of the Fellowships. In a competition each year the Watson Foundation selects and provides funds for graduating seniors from leading liberal arts institutions to embark on a year of self-directed, independent study while traveling outside the U.S. after their graduation. More than 1,000 students applied for the 60 Fellowships. LaRosa's project is titled "Shaping Media: Evolution Through Communication Technology: Tanzania, Uganda, Mexico, Slovenia and Finland." Huynh's project is "Acculturation in a New Nation: The Vietnamese Refugees." He will visit Thailand, Russia, Germany, France and the Philippines.

Twenty-one Hamilton College students are traveling in France from March 15-24 as part of the College’s Sophomore Seminar on World War II. They are members of the class, "The Politics and History of World War II," being taught by Professor of History Maurice Isserman and Associate Professor of Government Phil Klinkner.

Richard Nelson '72 is the director of a new musical, "My Life With Albertine," that premiered on March 13 at the newly-renovated Playwrights Horizon on W. 42nd Street in New York City. Nelson adapted the work from the French author Marcel Proust's multivolume novel, Remembrance of Things Past, with a score by Ricky Ian Gordon.

Cheng Li, professor of government, was quoted in this Newsweek article which focused China's prime minister Wen Jiabao. Li said Jiabao survived China's power politics because his technical expertise in so many areas makes him indispensable. "He's a classic technocrat-brainy but not political. He doesn't belong to anyone," he said.
