Two members of the Hamilton College Crew team, Mimi Barrett '02 (Washington, D.C.) and Johanna Carroll '03 (Holliston, MA), have been named National Rowing Scholar-Athletes of the Year by The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. Barrett, an American Studies major, and Carroll, a biology major, led the women's varsity 8+ crew to a 16th place finish at the 2001 Champions Regatta in Gainsville, Georgia. The duo also helped the Continentals to win the Gillman Plate versus Union College for the first time in four years.

Hamilton College has been selected as one of the three ACUTA Member Sites to See for the second quarter of 2001. The topic of this quarter's competition was On-Line Customer Surveys. "The Web site [http://www.hamilton.edu/college/its/telephones/phone_survey/phone_ survey.html] was selected based on criteria of content delivery, timeliness, ease of use, and accessibility," according to Jan Weller, chair of the Web Site Selection task force. Addressing voice, data and video communications needs for higher education, ACUTA serves more than 800 institutions of higher education and 2,000 telecommunications professionals from across the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Rob Parker, a rising sophomore at Hamilton College, passed up the opportunity to spend his summer lounging at the beach in order to participate in Hamilton's summer science research program. Parker has committed ten weeks to an internship in the chemistry department studying the encapsulation of enzymes in a sol-gel matrix.

Reunion Weekend at Hamilton is May 31 - June 3. Highlights include the dedication of The Samuel Eells House, a talk by pollster John Zogby, the dedication of the ropes course, an exhibit and gallery talk by alumni collectors of the Class of 1966, the traditional lobsterbake, reunion parade with the bagpipes of the Mohawk Valley Frasers, Saturday cookout, reunion choirs and more! The Emerson Gallery at Hamilton College presents a selection of works on loan from Class of 1966 alumni collectors. This exhibition was made possible by the contributions of six lenders: R. Steven Anderson, Michael S. Fawcett, D. Roger Howlett, Bruce Lundberg, Thomas J. Schwarz, and Woody Studenmund. The exhibition features paintings, drawings, photography, sculpture, and decorative arts, and will be open through June 29.

Eleanor Walsh Wertimer, attorney and former executive director of Family Services of Greater Utica, and wife of Hamilton College Professor Emeritus Sidney Wertimer,was presented with Hamilton’s top alumni award during Reunion Weekend festivities on Saturday, June 2.

Maggie Hanson (Bowdoinham,ME) and Kate Nelson '01 (Omaha,NE), both members of the Hamilton College track and field team, competed at the 2001 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend. The Championships were held at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. Hamilton finished 21st overall out of 73 teams.

Eric Feldman, a rising junior at Hamilton College, is foregoing the usual college student's summer activities in order to carry out a 10-week research internship with Herman Lehman, assistant professor of biology. Feldman is studying octopamine, an insect neurotransmitter, and the manner in which nitric oxide affects its functions throughout development.

By the time the epic film Pearl Harbor has swept across America, Dorie Miller, the first hero of World War II, will finally be well known outside the African-American community. Philip Klinkner, associate professor of government, devoted a chapter to Dorie Miller in his book, The Unsteady March: The Rise and Decline of Racial Equality in America.

"The Producers," the Broadway musical written by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan '51 received 11 Drama Desk awards, a new record. The musical opened in April to rave reviews and has already sold out tickets for the remainder of 2001. "The Producers" received awards for outstanding new musical, for outstanding actor in a musical, for the book, for the lyrics, for orchestrations, for set design, and for costume design. The musical has also been nominated for numerous Tony awards which will be presented at the 55th annual Tony awards on June 3.
