Even though they are distant from the Hill, the Portland Alumni Association gathers with regularity to sustain a vibrant local alumni community. It has become a tradition to kick-off the summer with a barbeque – and this year was no exception.

Following Monday’s CNN/YouTube Democratic presidential debate, CBS News summer intern and rising junior Eric Kuhn wrote an article about his observations of the novel event. The article was posted on CBS’ “Couric & Co.” blog on the CBS Web site. "Couric & Co." is a Web log whose principle contributors are CBS News producers and correspondents from around the world that, according to the site, focuses on “things large and small, from the meaningful to the amusing.”

Ten students have been selected as new writing tutors for the 2007-2008 academic year: Stephanie Anglin ’10, Winston Cook-Wilson ’09 (music), David Foster ’10, Whitney Kimmel ’08 (English, French), Chris Love ’10, Andrew Peart ’10, Mallory Reed ’10, Kevin Rowe ’10, Emily Tang ’08 (creative writing, Chinese), and Allison Trionfetti ’10. Students must be nominated by professors to be considered for the position, and finalists are selected based on superior writing skills

Maurice Isserman, James L. Ferguson Professor of History and co-author of America Divided: The Civil War of the 1960s, was quoted an Aug. 9 TIME magazine article titled “The Return of SDS to Campus.” In another look back at the ‘60s, Isserman, with co-author Michael Kazin of Georgetown University, penned an opinion piece that appeared in the Sunday, Aug. 12, edition of Newsday titled “Summer of love beats cynicism of today.”

Join alumni, faculty members, students and friends for Fallcoming '07 which will take place Thursday, Sept. 27 through Sunday, Sept. 30. During Fallcoming we will celebrate our inaugural Multicultural Reunion as well as a full schedule with world-class jazz, panel discussions and athletic contests.

Work created by Associate Professor of Art Ella Gant is on exhibit now through October 23 at Light Work, an arts center focused on the mediums of photography and digital imaging. As a recipient of one of the 33rd Annual Light Work Grants in Photography, Gant is exhibiting her work with two other recipients, Brantley Carroll and David Moore. A gallery reception will be held on Thursday, Sept. 6, from 5 – 8 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Kimberly Bauer exposed herself to severe culture shock this summer. The senior from Concord, Mass., spent her spring semester in Botswana and, three days after returning home, moved to New York City to take up her internship with New York-based NGO WildMetro.
