Evan Abelson ’16

Evan Abelson ’16 was recently hired to serve as the head cross country coach at William Smith College.

“I’m pleased to welcome Evan to our Heron coaching staff and to Hobart and William Smith Colleges,” the director of athletics at William Smith, Deb Steward, remarked. “Evan’s passion for coaching and running were evident in our search process. His knowledge of the science of training distance runners for peak performance will aid in our team’s success. In addition, Evan’s personal experience at a Division III liberal arts college will be a great asset in recruiting student-athletes to HWS."

Abelson earned this job opportunity after spending the past year as an assistant coach for both women’s and men’s cross country and track and field at SUNY Potsdam. Abelson said, “I’m extremely excited and grateful. I look forward to helping continue the success of the program and taking Heron cross country to new heights.”

At Hamilton, Abelson majored in environmental studies. He was a four-year letter winner on the Continentals’ cross country and track and field teams. During his junior and senior year seasons, Abelson served as cross country team captain, leading the Hamilton team to a spot in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship. He earned All-Atlantic Region honors in cross country in 2015 and ran in the national championship meet that year.
